What is Spiritual Direction?
Embarking on a deeper relationship with God is an all-important lifelong journey. Spiritual formation is a growing awareness of God’s constant and transforming presence. We are invited to learn in and through the experience while yielding to God's grace. This place of formation can be enhanced by walking alongside another who is intentional in their own transformational journey with God. We see this type of relationship throughout the New Testament and church history: Paul with Timothy, Priscilla and Aquilla with Apollo, Jesus with the disciples, the Desert Fathers and Mothers, and many others.
Spiritual direction is an ongoing relationship where two people sit together in God’s presence while listening to what God is doing in the directee’s life. In this sacred space, God is the “real Director.” We don’t try to come up with solutions to the struggles along the way but listen to what God has to say about living life in God's presence in the midst of the struggles. In this, the goal is to help the directee pay attention to God’s personal communication in their life. Then in noticing God, creating the space to respond and allow an experiential and intimate relationship to continue to grow. This deepening of our individual relationship with God begins to impact the world around us.
